Ardbeg Uigeadail
Ardbeg Uigeadail is a highly regarded single malt Scotch whisky from the Ardbeg Distillery, located on the Isle of Islay, Scotland. The distillery, established in 1815, is famous for producing some of the most intensely peated whiskies in the world. Uigeadail (pronounced “Oog-a-dal”) is named after the loch (lake) from which Ardbeg draws its pure water, Loch Uigeadail. This whisky is a core expression of the Ardbeg range and is particularly beloved by whisky enthusiasts for its complex and robust flavor profile.
Uigeadail is a non-age-statement (NAS) whisky, meaning it doesn’t specify the age of the whiskies used in the blend. However, it is crafted from a mix of older, sherry-cask-matured whiskies and younger, bourbon-cask-aged whiskies. This combination results in a whisky that is both rich and smoky, with a deep complexity that reflects the best of both aging processes.
The Ardbeg distillery has experienced periods of closure and revival throughout the years with dedicated efforts by whisky enthusiasts, and the Ardbeg Distillery Ltd to preserve its inimitable heritage. Despite these challenges, Ardbeg has become highly regarded for the production of exceptional peated whisky.
The Ardbeg distillery is currently owned by The Glenmorangie Company, which is part of the LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy) luxury group. The Glenmorangie Co acquired Ardbeg in 1997, injecting new life into the distillery and helping to ensure its continued legacy as a celebrated whisky producer.Tasting notes for Ardbeg Uigeadail include:
-
Nose: The aroma is rich and inviting, with prominent notes of dark chocolate, dried fruits (such as raisins and figs), and espresso. These are complemented by the signature Ardbeg smokiness, with hints of tobacco, leather, and a touch of honeyed sweetness.
-
Palate: On the palate, Uigeadail is full-bodied and intense, with a powerful wave of peat smoke. This is balanced by sweet and savory flavors, including treacle, caramelized sugar, spices like nutmeg and cinnamon, and the dried fruits carried over from the nose. The sherry influence adds a layer of richness, with a slight nuttiness and a hint of bitter dark chocolate.
-
Finish: The finish is long and warming, with a lingering smokiness that gradually fades into a complex mix of spices, oak, and a subtle sweetness. It’s a finish that evolves, leaving a lasting impression of both peat and sherry richness.
Ardbeg Uigeadail has received numerous accolades and is often considered one of the best Islay single malts available. Its combination of intense peat and rich, sherried complexity makes it a favorite among whisky aficionados who appreciate bold and multifaceted drams. It’s a whisky that can be savored slowly, revealing new layers of flavor with each sip.
Ardbeg Uigeadail was voted by the 120,000+ strong Ardbeg Committee as their favourite Ardbeg.
