818 Tequila Anejo
Tequila 818 is a relatively new entrant in the world of premium tequilas, launched by Kendall Jenner in 2021. Despite being a celebrity-backed brand, 818 has garnered attention for its quality and authenticity. The name “818” is derived from the area code of Jenner’s hometown in Calabasas, California, reflecting a personal connection to the brand.
Tequila 818 is produced in the Tequila Valley region of Jalisco, Mexico, a place renowned for its ideal growing conditions for Blue Weber Agave. The tequila is crafted at the La CofradÃa distillery, which has been producing tequila for over 50 years. The distillery is known for combining traditional methods with modern techniques to create a balanced and refined spirit.
The production process for 818 starts with the selection of mature Blue Weber Agave, which is grown for around 7-8 years before harvesting. The agave is then slow-cooked in brick ovens to develop its natural sweetness. After cooking, the agave is crushed, and the juice is extracted and fermented using a proprietary yeast strain. The fermentation process is followed by double distillation in copper pot stills, which helps to purify and enhance the tequila’s flavours.
Tequila 818 has been well-received, winning several awards for its quality, including accolades from the World Tequila Awards and the SIP Awards. While the brand’s celebrity association has contributed to its popularity, the quality of the tequila itself has played a crucial role in its success. 818 is positioned as a premium, yet approachable tequila, appealing to both new and seasoned tequila drinkers.
Tequila 818 comes in three main expressions: Blanco, Reposado, and Añejo.
The Añejo is aged for over a year in American oak barrels, resulting in a deeper amber hue and a more mature flavor. It features notes of toasted oak, caramel, and vanilla, with a smooth, lingering finish that has hints of spices and dried fruits.
