J J Corry “The Gael” Irish Whiskey
J.J Corry “The Hanson” Irish Whiskey was established in 2013 by Louise McGuane it is a revival of an old firm from her hometown of Kilrush in County Clare, Ireland. She has established a reputation for creating exceptional whiskies using traditional Irish methods. The whisky is named The Gael which means “The Wild Geese” This was a term used to describe Irish soldiers who fought overseas in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.
The whiskey is made using 60% malt and 40% grain. The malted barley is smoked over peat from the local bog. This process imparts a smoky flavour not unlike an Islay scotch.
This is a complex and layered whiskey with smoke, peat, honey and vanilla with a touch of spice. There is plenty of rich, smooth and creamy mouthfeel with fruits and dark chocolate. A smokey after-taste lingers long and finishes warm.
It’s worth noting that Irish whiskey is well known for being distilled three times. This creates a smoother and lighter spirit than Scotch whisky which is typically distilled twice. This gives irish whisky it’s distintive character and sets it apart from other whiskies from across the world.
A fun fact for you: J.J Corey names each batch after a different person so each batch is unique and personal.
